Urban Bonfire Outdoor Kitchen: Aluminum That Survives Winter
The cabinet box, not the grill, decides how long an outdoor kitchen lasts in Québec. Powder-coated marine-grade aluminum is currently the strongest compromise against freeze-thaw and road salt — but only if the finish, the drainage and the hardware are specified as carefully as the metal itself.
Why the box fails before the appliance does
A premium grill is built to live outside: heavy stainless, replaceable burners, long warranties. The furniture holding it up is usually the least-considered part of the project. When an outdoor kitchen ages badly here, the symptoms repeat: doors out of alignment, drawers that bind, rust bloom in the corners.
Road salt, not just rain
Our chlorides arrive from the street and off boots, not from the sea. Type 304 stainless contains no molybdenum and is vulnerable to chloride pitting — solutions with as little as 25 ppm of sodium chloride can start corrosion. Type 316, with 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, is specifically recommended where de-icing salts are common.
Three failure paths, not one
Standing water freezes and works the joints. Chlorides attack as localized pits rather than even rust. Thermal movement pulls things out of square, and every material moves at its own rate. A good box handles all three. Most handle one.

Where aluminum is the weaker choice
Three cases. Mixed hardware: an aluminum box with stainless screws in a chloride environment forms a galvanic couple that has to be isolated or re-specified. Impact: aluminum dents where 316 shrugs. Aesthetics: if the client wants the warmth of wood grain, high-density moulded PVC does that better than painted metal — the territory of NatureKast cabinetry. That is not a compromise, it is a different project.
Powder coat or anodizing — what the finish actually survives
The metal does not rust; the finish chalks and loses gloss. That is where the standards earn their keep, because they are measured rather than claimed.

Both 2604 and 2605 cap colour change at 5 Delta E units and require a chalk rating of 8 or better. Anodizing is specified by film thickness instead, and the most common specification error is choosing Class II outdoors because it looks exactly like Class I.
Filiform corrosion, the quiet enemy of painted aluminum
It shows up under the paint as worm-like filaments, and it is generally associated with marine and, to a lesser degree, industrial environments. Thicker paint does not fix it: it is prevented at pretreatment, by removing surface magnesium oxide and chemically etching before conversion coating and painting. Anodizing used as a pretreatment before painting can also help. On site that translates simply — a scratch that reaches bare metal in a salted driveway gets touched up the following spring.
Drainage is designed inside the box
Water gets in: past the doors, as condensation on cold metal, off the hose. The only question that matters is how it gets out. A box sealed at the bottom is a reservoir; a box that lets air move dries.
Urban Bonfire's installation manual is direct about it: the kitchen should sit on a stable surface — patio, deck, balcony or roof — as near to level as drainage requirements allow. In other words, the slab slopes and the furniture gets levelled, on commercial-grade 304 stainless levelling legs, with a toe kick that follows the site's slope.
Modular or built-in, on a deck that moves with frost
A masonry kitchen is tied to the ground, so its footing has to go below frost. Table 9.12.2.2 of the Québec Construction Code requires at least 1.2 m, or down to the frost penetration limit where that is deeper — around Montréal, 1.2 to 1.8 m is common practice. A floating slab under a masonry island will move, and the countertop pays for it.
Modular aluminum cabinetry sidesteps part of that. Per the manufacturer's manual, a standard installation is freestanding and does not need to be fixed to the ground or wall, except on wind-exposed sites. The trade-off: the deck must carry the loaded weight, and cabinets come in 18-inch to 36-inch width increments, which constrains the plan. Hardware and soft-close at −25 °C
Soft-close slows down in winter. That is not a defect: the dampers are fluid-filled and the fluid thickens in the cold. Blum documents it plainly for its CLIP top BLUMOTION hinges, which are designed to be used between 65 and 85 °F (roughly 18 to 29 °C); lower or higher temperatures will not damage the hinge but will affect closing speed, and optimal action returns once the temperature does.
Urban Bonfire also tells owners to rinse stainless hinges, slides and handles with water regularly in salt-air settings, and states that surface rust speckling on 304 stainless is normal and lifts off with a light abrasive pad. Useful and honest: 304 speckles, even at the premium end.
Urban Bonfire: what is true, and what needs a caveat
Urban Bonfire really is a Montréal company. Its offices are here — the brand refers to "our offices in the heart of design-centric Montreal" — and its line is "Designed in Montreal, Engineered for Life Outdoors." The caveat matters. Its own Design Services page says that once the design is finalized, production begins at its manufacturing facility in Michigan, and the site describes cabinetry designed, manufactured and tested in North America. The local advantage is real — design and engineering here, bilingual documentation, service in the same time zone — but there is no Montréal factory.
On materials, the brand publishes "marine grade aluminum" and claims boxes twice as thick as most stainless cabinetry on the market while being lighter. It does not publish the alloy, the gauge, or an AAMA class for its NACRAd powder coat. Three things to get in writing on the quote.
The warranty, read all the way through
The registration page advertises a limited 10-year warranty on the cabinetry. The warranty document itself splits it: 10 years on structural integrity, 3 years on painted finishes, 2 years on drawer slides and hinges — and it explicitly excludes surface corrosion and discoloration. Add residential use only, non-transferable, purchase through an authorized dealer, and replacement shipping at the customer's cost. One more gap, between two documents from the same maker: the care guide recommends cleaning twice a year, while the warranty calls for cleaning at least every two weeks where pool chlorine or salt is in the air. Beside a pool or a salted driveway, the short interval is the one that protects the finish.
What has to be locked before production starts
Cut-outs are machined to a specific model, not to a category. Grill, refrigerated drawer, sink and faucet are chosen before the cabinets are ordered — as true for a Twin Eagles as for any other outdoor cooking appliance. The manufacturer publishes spec sheets, a compatibility chart and CAD/SketchUp files for every cabinet, including conduit holes and access panels. Those files go to the countertop fabricator and the gas fitter, not into a folder.
The manual defers to local codes and requires planning and installation by a locally licensed tradesperson. In Québec, gas and electrical are reserved trades: services get planned before the slab is poured, or a new patio gets opened back up. The countertop is ordered once the cabinets are set and levelled.
Lead times and measuring
Urban Bonfire's published process runs six steps: gather dimensions, consultation, proposal with 3D renderings and quote, referral to an authorized dealer, production, then quality control and shipping. No lead time in weeks is published, so ask for the current production window in writing at quote stage.
And measure the finished deck, never the drawing. Slab poured, decking down, slope checked — that is when dimensions become reliable. Remaking a 30-inch cabinet because the decking finished two inches wide costs more than a verification visit.
From the field
We never sell a box before seeing where the water goes. The first visit is spent watching where water runs in heavy rain. If the deck holds water in a corner, we fix that before discussing finishes. A good cabinet set in a puddle loses five years.
Levelling legs get reset in spring. A wood deck moves over a winter. Re-levelling in May takes twenty minutes and prevents crooked doors all summer; we show the client how at handover.
We warn about soft-close in advance. On the first hard freeze the phone rings because "the drawers don't close themselves anymore." That is damper fluid, and it comes back at thaw. Said beforehand it is a characteristic; said afterward it is a complaint.
Common questions
What does "marine grade" actually mean?
For aluminum it points to the 5xxx alloy series, where magnesium — about 2.5 percent in 5052 — improves resistance to pitting and stress-corrosion cracking in salt environments. It is not a certification. For plastics, "marine grade polymer" is a marketing term with no performance standard behind it. Either way, ask for the exact alloy or resin in writing.
Can the cabinets stay outside all winter?
Yes — that is the whole point of exterior aluminum cabinetry, it stays in place year-round. What you should not do is wrap it in a sealed tarp, which traps moisture against the finish. 316 or 304 for exposed hardware?
316 carries 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, which markedly improves chloride resistance, and it is recommended where de-icing salts are common. 304 has none and can speckle. Beside a salted driveway or a pool, the premium for 316 is justified; in a sheltered yard, 304 rinsed regularly holds up well.
Anodizing or powder coat outdoors?
Both work. Powder gives you colour and is specified by AAMA class: 2604 as a floor outdoors, 2605 if the budget allows. Anodizing gives a metallic finish and is specified by film thickness — Class I (≥0.7 mil) outside, never Class II, which is meant for interiors despite looking identical.
Get the box right, then everything else
An outdoor kitchen that survives ten Québec winters is not one with a better grill. It is one whose box drains, whose finish has a class written down somewhere, whose hardware suits chlorides, and whose base accepts that the deck moves. Marine-grade aluminum answers those four demands well; it does not replace them.
