Bioclimatic Pergola Cost in Québec: What Actually Drives the Price
Nobody can price a bioclimatic pergola honestly without knowing the span, the mounting method and the level of equipment. Those three variables, not the brand, are what open the gap between two quotes. Here is every line that actually lands on a Québec quote, and how much each one moves the total.
Why there is no honest price per square foot
A price per square foot assumes the bill rises in proportion to the area covered. On a load-bearing structure sized for snow, it does not: the span between posts is what dictates the aluminum section, and capacity falls far faster than area rises.
We do not publish prices, and repeating a competitor's number would not help you. What is verifiable is the list of line items on a real quote, their relative weight, and what you have to demand in writing before two offers become comparable.

Those two figures are the only ones any of our suppliers puts in writing. They are European starting prices, in euros, for "basic" models, with no size, installation or tax stated. They do not convert into Canadian dollars, and they carry neither freight nor the reinforcement our snow demands.
Span: the line item that decides everything else
Making the module bigger costs far more than the added area suggests, and Renson's published tables show it plainly. The Algarve is rated 300 kg/m² at 2400 × 2615 mm and 34 kg/m² at 4500 × 6055 mm. The Camargue goes from 866 kg/m² at 2000 × 4000 mm to 41 kg/m² at 4500 × 6200 mm.
Roughly double the area, and capacity drops by a factor of eight to twenty. The design load does not move — it depends on your municipality. Staying above the line at a long span therefore means buying capacity back, and that buy-back is the bill.
Three ways to buy capacity back
Shrink the module and install two. Add a beam: Renson's published reinforced variant lifts the Algarve to 584 kg/m² at 3200 × 2615 mm and 51 kg/m² at 6000 × 6055 mm. Or add posts, exactly as BT Italia does when it goes from four supports to six to reach 8.00 m. Each is a separate line on the quote.
That is where two offers "for the same 20-foot-wide pergola" diverge: one is a single reinforced module, the other two coupled modules with a centre post in the middle of your dining table.
Wall-mounted or freestanding
Wall-mounted saves posts, but buys flashing, an engineered wall connection, and snow sliding off the roof above — the worst enemy of a pergola in Québec. Fixing that wipes out the saving fast.
Options: what actually carries weight
Some accessories are hardware; others drag in a second trade — electrical, drainage, structure — and that is where the bill climbs.

The louvre-zone trap
"Motorized" tells you nothing about the number of zones. Two coupled modules give two independently driven zones: more motors, more controls, heavier electrical work. Get the number of motors supplied and the number of drivable zones in writing — it often explains the entire gap between two offers that look identical.
Downspouts, underestimated every time
A closed pergola is a roof. Renson requires one downspout under 16 m² and two above; BT Italia also requires two on the R600. The material is trivial; the cost is routing that water somewhere other than your slab, unless you want a skating rink in February.
The costs that do not come from the manufacturer
A substantial share of the budget appears in no catalogue. These are the items that separate a complete quote from a "starting at."
The engineering stamp
Several Montréal boroughs require, for a permanent shelter, an attestation from a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec confirming that the structure carries the Code loads. It is a separate professional mandate and it comes early: no stamp, no permit. Ask whether it is included.
Footings below frost depth
Table 9.12.2.2 of the Québec Construction Code sets the minimum foundation depth and, in several cases, requires at least 1.2 m or the frost penetration limit if it is deeper. So: poured footings or helical piles, never patio blocks laid on grade. This item varies more from lot to lot than the pergola does.
Electrical work, by a licensed contractor
This is not a preference, it is the law. The Régie du bâtiment du Québec requires a licence carrying subcategory 16 — electrical contractor — for any electrical installation work. The Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec states that no one may carry out electrical work of any kind, in their own home or for anyone else, without being an electrical contractor. Motors, sensors, LEDs and heating put you squarely in that regime.
Permit fees, on the other hand, are published
This is the only line item your municipality prices publicly. Two examples from published documents:

The permit itself stays modest next to the work: what costs is the paperwork behind it — plans, certificate of location, engineering attestation. And because the fee is indexed to the declared value of the work, a more complete quote raises the permit. Check your own city's schedule: Longueuil publishes no fee in its fact sheet but caps height at 3.5 m and requires a 0.5 m setback from a lot line.
Access, handling and crane
An R600 averages 30 kg/m² of structure and its posts arrive in full lengths. A 90 cm side passage, a fence to remove, a garden to protect: none of that is on a spec sheet, and all of it is paid in hours. On tight sites you need a crane or a telehandler, sometimes with a temporary street-occupancy permit.
Taxes
GST at 5% and QST at 9.975%, the QST calculated on the selling price excluding GST, for a combined effective rate of 14.975%. A quote "before tax" and a quote "taxes included" are not comparable as they stand.
Winter or spring: the calendar moves the bill
An order placed in winter lands in an empty book: the aluminum gets fabricated, the permit gets processed while the ground is frozen, and installation is scheduled for thaw. A May order joins the busiest queue of the year, often with installation pushed to fall — Laval alone quotes roughly 30 days to process this type of permit. The final constraint is physical: footings are poured frost-free.
From the field
We size the span before talking money. Our first question is never the budget, it is the area to cover and the exposure of the yard. Before that, any number quoted is a fiction we would have to walk back.
The gaps between quotes come from the invisible items. It is almost never the aluminum that explains the difference. It is the engineer included or not, real footings or blocks, electrical by a licensed contractor or "talk to yours," and the permit left to you.
We pull the electrical before we pour. The conduit runs inside the post, and the post is set on the footing. Adding heating later means reopening a slab — a redo that costs more than the option.
What to ask for so two quotes are comparable
This is the list we use ourselves. Send it as is to every supplier, in writing. An offer that will not answer these seven points has just told you something useful.

A quote that answers all seven is comparable to another quote that answers all seven. The rest is a brochure with a price at the bottom.
Common questions
Why no price per square foot?
Because it assumes a linear progression that does not exist on a load-bearing structure. Renson's tables show capacity falling from 300 kg/m² to 34 kg/m² between the smallest and largest module in one range. At equal area, two different spans do not give the same structure or the same price.
Is there a published price anywhere?
One, from Renson: its blog lists the basic Algarve and Camargue models from €18,000 and €20,000. European prices, in euros, with no size, installation or tax stated — they do not convert into Québec prices. BT Italia and Cubrics publish nothing.
How much of the budget is outside the manufacturer's scope?
A real share, and it varies widely by lot: footings below frost depth, electrical by a licensed contractor, the engineering attestation, permit fees, access and handling, then 14.975% in combined tax. On a yard with no vehicle access, those items outweigh any catalogue option.
Do permit fees matter?
Modest in themselves, but real and published. Laval charges $92 for the first $20,000 of work value plus $2.50 per additional $1,000, and requires a permit from 18 m². The L'Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève borough posts $9.80 per $1,000, minimum $255.
Does adding an option later cost more?
Almost always, when it touches the electrical. Heating, in-louvre lighting, a second louvre zone and motorized screens all run through conduit housed in the posts, and the posts are set on the footings. Planning the conduit up front costs little; adding it later means reopening a slab.
The right way to start
Fix the area to cover and the mounting method. Then ask, in writing, for the allowable snow load at those exact dimensions: that is the number that sets the structure, and therefore the price. Add the options one at a time, then the site items.
